Indian Oil Corporation Limited

Company encyclopediaReviewed 3 Nov 2026 · Financial periods labelled throughout

Overview

Indian Oil Corporation Limited, usually styled IndianOil, is an integrated energy company whose principal activities span refining, pipelines and marketing. It processes crude oil into fuels and other products, moves material through bulk infrastructure, and serves customers through retail, LPG, aviation and industrial channels. Petrochemicals, natural gas, upstream interests and newer energy activities extend the portfolio. [1]

Its corporate base is New Delhi, while its registered office is in Mumbai. The distinction matters for a company directory: an administrative headquarters, a legal correspondence address and a refinery are different kinds of location. IndianOil’s operating footprint is nationwide and cannot be represented by either head-office address alone. [5]

The legal company was incorporated as Indian Oil Company Limited in 1959. The 1964 merger with Indian Refineries Limited created the Indian Oil Corporation identity. Thus 1959 is the incorporation year and 1964 is a major combination and renaming milestone, rather than an interchangeable founding date. [2][3]

The October letter explains that the CIN changed following recategorisation of the principal industrial activity under NIC 2008. It says the principal activities continue to be refining, transportation, marketing and distribution of petroleum products and allied energy businesses. Older company pages still displaying the former number should be read with that later disclosure. [4]

These milestones describe selected changes in the business. The original records provide the fuller chronology. [3][2][12][20][15][16][7][17][4]

How the business makes money

The refining and marketing chain begins with crude procurement and processing and ends with the sale of a product mix. Refineries produce transport fuels, feedstocks and speciality products. Pipelines, terminals, storage and distribution connect that output with customers. Commercial results depend on sourcing, refinery performance, market prices, product demand and the terms of sale. [3]

Analytical context: crude throughput is the quantity processed, sales volume is the quantity sold, and revenue is measured in currency. These measures differ because product purchases, exports, inventory and the portfolio mix intervene. A higher oil price can increase reported revenue without an equivalent increase in physical activity or profitability. [9]

Inventory also matters. Crude and product prices can move between purchase, processing and sale, creating gains or losses under the relevant accounting treatment. Refining margins, marketing outcomes and reported net profit are related but distinct. The company’s October 2026 release explicitly cautions that future inventory losses could affect profitability. [10]

Major businesses & activities

Refining, pipelines and marketing

The integrated core combines industrial conversion with logistics and customer access. Refineries must process an appropriate crude slate into products that meet specifications. Pipelines move crude and products in bulk; marketing reaches motorists, households, airlines and industrial users. Each stage needs its own reliability and safety systems even though the chain is commercially connected. [8]

Petrochemicals and natural gas

Petrochemicals create a market for refinery streams beyond transport fuels, including polymers and chemical intermediates used in manufacturing. Natural-gas activity spans import-related infrastructure, marketing and city-gas interests. These businesses have different feedstock, infrastructure and customer characteristics, so they should not be presented as simply additional petrol-pump sales. [1][15]

Upstream and newer energy

The group also has oil and gas exploration and production interests, alongside renewable power, hydrogen, biofuels, compressed biogas and electric-mobility initiatives. Participation in a resource project differs from refining crude bought from another producer. New-energy activity likewise ranges from research and pilots to operating assets and development programmes. [8][16]

Brands, products & customer-facing names

Product brands are different from legal entities and investment securities [12][13][14][16][15]
NameWhat it identifies
IndianOilCorporate identity and retail fuel-network branding.
IndaneLPG brand serving domestic, commercial and industrial applications.
SERVOLubricant and grease product identity.
XP95 and XP100Named petrol products with different octane specifications.
XTRAPREMIUMA petrol product identity within the motorists’ portfolio.
Terra CleanA separate green-energy company, not a petrol grade.
Chennai Petroleum / CPCLA separately listed refining subsidiary, not a retail fuel brand.

Fuel and lubricant choice depends on the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and the product specification. Higher octane is not automatically necessary for every vehicle. Consult the official product descriptions for specifications and availability. [13][14]

Subsidiaries, ventures & group boundaries

The group portfolio distinguishes subsidiaries, joint ventures and other interests in refining, gas, infrastructure, international activity and new energy. CPCL became a subsidiary in 2001 and remains a separate listed company with its own reporting. Its refinery assets belong to that company’s operating perimeter even when they are discussed within the IndianOil group. [15]

Terra Clean was incorporated in May 2024 as a wholly owned subsidiary for green business. Its role includes renewable-energy and related development. A legal vehicle can be established before all planned projects begin operating, so incorporation, investment commitment, construction and commissioned capacity should be recorded separately. [16]

Analytical context: consolidated statements include controlled companies and account for other investments under the applicable standards. Standalone statements describe Indian Oil Corporation Limited itself. Simply adding subsidiary sales to a consolidated figure would generally duplicate amounts already captured; group and parent comparisons require consistent periods and boundaries. [8][11]

Leadership & governance

The reviewed official leadership page identifies A. S. Sahney as Chairman. The appointment announcement records Arvinder Singh Sahney taking charge on 13 November 2024, following experience in refining and petrochemicals. His official biography describes work involving the Paradip refinery and leadership of the petrochemical vertical. [6][7]

The organisation combines functional management with government nominees and independent-board oversight under the relevant company and listing framework. Refining, marketing, human resources, finance, planning and research involve different responsibilities. The annual report and exchange announcements identify appointments and departures for their specific dates. [2][22]

Analytical context: governance review should consider procurement, project approval, related-party transactions, risk controls and the treatment of public-policy obligations. A large retail network or a strong profit year does not by itself establish the quality of every investment decision. Committee composition and compliance disclosures need to be assessed for the reporting period concerned. [8]

Corporate offices, refineries & research footprint

The R&D centre develops technologies and products and supports operational improvement. Its documented work includes pipeline inspection tools and associated data capabilities. Research infrastructure is relevant to long-term competitiveness, but a patent, pilot or technical demonstration should not be equated with an operating refinery or an established commercial revenue stream. [20]

Financial context & dated performance

Company releases: year ended 31 March 2026 and six months ended 30 September 2026 [9][10]
Standalone measureFY2025–26H1 FY2026–27
Revenue from operations, ₹ crore886,224538,907
Net profit, ₹ crore36,80218,969
Crude throughput, million metric tonnes75.45137.273
Pipeline throughput, million metric tonnes105.55653.896

The full-year release is dated 18 May 2026 and the half-year release 30 October. These are parent-company standalone figures, not consolidated group results. The periods have different lengths. Pipeline throughput is a logistics measure and may include flows other than crude processed by the parent refineries; the rows should not be added into one volume total. [9][10]

Analytical context: reported profit is not a normalised margin estimate. Refining and marketing conditions, inventory movements, government-related compensation where recognised, tax and other accounting items require the statements and notes. The company’s October commentary attributes current profitability partly to temporary crude-price conditions and warns about possible subsequent inventory losses. [10][11]

Public ownership & investor information

IndianOil is a Government of India-controlled publicly listed enterprise. Its NSE symbol is IOC and BSE code 530965. The original October CIN letter confirms these identifiers, while the integrated financial filing provides the company’s name, reporting currency and period. This profile omits an undated government holding percentage. [4][11]

Parent shares and shares of a listed subsidiary such as CPCL are different securities with different rights and financial boundaries. A group brand on an asset or customer product does not identify which listed company issues the relevant security. Formal shareholder and disclosure enquiries should use the official investor channels. [15][22]

Strategy, expansion & key developments

Project SPRINT began in April 2025 as a three-year programme focused on profitability, productivity and capital efficiency. The annual account connects operational improvement, customer focus, technology, talent and readiness for a changing energy mix. These are company objectives; their results need to be assessed through operating outcomes and reported performance over time. [17]

The same FY2025–26 account describes refinery expansions at Panipat from 15 to 25 MMTPA, Gujarat from 13 to 18 MMTPA and Barauni from 6 to 9 MMTPA as under implementation. These are planned post-expansion capacities, not a claim that all additions were commissioned by the review date. A later completion announcement is the appropriate evidence for a change of status. [17]

Terra Clean gives the group a dedicated vehicle for new-energy development. Renewable generation and associated businesses can broaden the portfolio, while the core fuel and petrochemical system continues to require investment. The commercial balance depends on demand, execution, funding and the economics of each technology, rather than the number of initiatives announced. [16][8]

People, customers & research capabilities

The workforce spans process operations, maintenance, pipeline engineering, laboratories, logistics, marketing, finance, technology and support functions. A business serving both industrial users and households needs technical reliability as well as customer-service capabilities. The official careers portal is the source for current recruitment requirements, employing entity and application deadlines. [21]

The stakeholder report describes relationships with suppliers, contractors, shipping and transport partners. These organisations influence supply reliability even though their staff are not necessarily IndianOil employees. Direct employees, contract workers and business partners should consequently retain separate boundaries in workforce and safety comparisons. [19]

Environmental management & energy transition

IndianOil’s FY2025–26 sustainability account states a target of net-zero operational emissions by 2046. The word operational matters: this is not a statement that every emission associated with using the company’s fuels has already been eliminated. The report describes climate governance and environmental and energy-management systems across operating locations. [18]

Analytical context: refineries require energy and water and must manage emissions, effluent and waste; pipelines and terminals introduce their own integrity and spill risks. Biofuels, hydrogen, renewables and electric-mobility infrastructure have different operating and life-cycle characteristics. Their environmental contribution depends on production inputs, scale and use, not simply on an alternative-energy label. [1]

Risks & matters to monitor

Analytical context: crude prices, product prices, exchange rates and inventory timing can move results sharply. Refinery maintenance, equipment reliability, shipping, pipeline integrity and distribution disruptions affect physical performance. A higher sales value can reflect prices rather than more fuel supplied, and a favourable margin period may not persist. [10][9]

Procurement and logistics expose the business to changing international supply conditions and counterparties. The stakeholder report explains the importance of a coordinated supply chain. Diversifying sources can improve flexibility but does not remove all shipping, payment or geopolitical dependencies. [19]

Large refinery and new-energy projects create construction, funding and technology risks before commercial operation. Public-policy measures can also affect pricing and compensation. Review the accounting notes for recognition and receivables, and preserve the documented stage of each project or proceeding. An announced target should not be described as an achieved operating result. [17][11]

Reports & research documents

Use financial statements for accounting figures, annual reports for the wider business and governance picture, and dated announcements for subsequent developments. Figures with different reporting boundaries or periods should be compared only after checking their definitions.
